Paper 2 – Responding to Drama
**ALL WORK MUST BE SUBMITTED AS A WORD DOCUMENT ATTACHMENT ONLY**
Due Wednesday, 3/14 via Blackboard by 11:59pm. No late work will be accepted.
Write a 3 page paper using the prompt below. You must include reference to the
article, “Silent Justice in a Different Key: Glaspell’s ‘Trifles’” by Suzie Clarkson
Holstein, and a Works Cited page that provides a citation for this article.
Glaspell uses different layers of symbolism throughout the play; explore some of the
more important instances in which the play employs symbolism and discuss their
possible meaning. Ultimately, do you think justice is served in this play? Why or why
not? Your thesis statement should look like this:
In her play “Trifles” Susan Glaspell examines/discusses/ shows
___________________________. She employs _______________ in order to
help get her message to readers.
The important thing here is for you to consider HOW Glaspell gets her message
across. Some things you might consider in your response include but are not limited
to:
1. What might be some of the symbolism generated by a dead bird which formerly
resided in a cage?
2. In what ways do the women in this play assert their own power?
3. Interrogate the different meanings and connotations of the play’s title. On a
cultural and historical level, what does it refer to, what does it exclude, and
why?
Be sure to use the text in your response and follow MLA formatting rules. You must
also include a WORKS CITED page listing the play and any other sources you
reference.
PRO-TIP: Don’t forget the details!
Your heading should be a block title (not a header) that has the following information
on the left hand side of your paper – SINGLE SPACE for your heading.
