Individual Reflective Journal
For this assessment, students are expected to write a weekly journal over the duration of the 12-week teaching period that documents a critical analysis of their learning process for this unit. In the journal students need to reflect/review how they have progressed with the learning goals related to assessments 1 and 2 of engaging in Business Research. Students need to write their individual reflective journal concurrently with performing assessment tasks 1 and 2, i.e. from the first week of the subject.
For each week, students need to make journal entries that provide a reflection of their ‘journey’ of gaining, and applying knowledge of the research paradigm. For each week students should reflect and compare the theoretical knowledge with what they apply into practice. As assessment 1 and 2 are completed, students should clearly identify learning goals achieved.
Assessment 3: Individual reflective journal
In the current era, the need of proving more patient centered care in the healthcare sector has called for the adequacy of staff for meeting the needs of patients in healthcare organizations. Therefore, this has become extremely important that the healthcare organizations have a backup of ample number of staffs for looking after each of the patients. As studied by Harvey et al. (2017), the data reveals that one in every 20 healthcare staff is indulged into night work shifts.
Furthermore, according to Demerouti et al. (2014), a majority of the staff work for more than 20 hours a day which is far more than average working hour stated by the government. The normal shift of staff at hospitals should be between 6 and 12 hours. Therefore, in most of the healthcare organizations, the time shift is divided into three or four shifts a day. However, in this regard, the issue that persists is the working of a single staff in multiple shifts, thereby, making them work for extra hours than what they should. As observed by Soni and Rastogi (2017), whenever workers are made to work for more than 48 hours a week, they are paid extra.
However, the ability to select the shifts does not depend on the staffs and they are made to work at any point of time in a day which shall sometimes be multiple shifts as well. Due to long hours of work of the healthcare staff, they shall become secluded form their family. Thus, due to that, I have come to know of the fact that there should be spending of a minimum hours at work only.
It is immensely important for staffs and higher officials of healthcare organizations to abide by legislation and make staffs work within the stipulated time only. I have come to know that there are certain functions of people within the household which they need to perform. Thus, flexibility in time shift shall help them spend quality time with their household.
The staff indulged into long working hours shall not be able to perform the basic roles and responsibilities that he has in family and henceforth, it leads to a mental detachment of that people from his family as well. All these factors could contribute to the mental health deterioration of the concerned person. As a result of the aforementioned factors, there shall be mental issues of the staff and thus, they would not feel happy at their workplace.
As commented by von Treuer, Fuller-Tyszkiewicz and Little (2014), this leads to the deterioration of their performance as performance is hugely determined by the mental state of an individual. Thus, if a person is motivated and satisfied with his workplace, he shall perform better than a person who is dissatisfied with his workplace.
As reported by Mullins et al. (2014), sleep is the most important factor that is triggered by night shifts of people. The human body is designed in a way that it adjusts to a situation it is in. Thus, night shifts for repeated number of days results in reduction of sleep of staff by 2 hours. Apart from the quantity of sleep, the quality of shift is also affected as there are severe disruptions in sleep of the person. As studied by Zboril-Benson (2016), the death of adequate sleep results in sleepiness during the working hours and therefore, the normal performance of the brain also get disrupted.
The dearth of sleep often results in fatigue of the concerned person and thus, he becomes unable to work efficiently in the healthcare organization. Fatigue is the second most significant factor that is triggered due to work shifts of the staffs. As stated by Li et al. (2014), fatigue often results in abnormal functioning of the brain, thereby, resulting in anxiety and stress due to the imbalance in hormonal levels. Therefore, the dearth of sleep results in fatigue which results in the reluctance of the staffs to work efficiently. Due to this factor, they also become more irritated and peevish in nature.
According to Linton et al. (2015), the mental health of people is by large responsible for the functioning of the other systems of human body as well. The tiredness and anxiety of the people results in imbalance of hormones and therefore, there develops a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases.
The hectic work shifts often results in the improper diet and rest of the person. Moreover, due to stress and anxiety they also become more prone to the dearth of good hormones secretion and they shall face issues of cardiac arrest. In a study conducted by Crain et al. (2014), it has been witnessed that almost 48% of the staffs working in long shift hours have developed cardiac issues in relation to those who work for less hours a day.
Therefore, in the process of completion of assessment 1 and 2, I have come up with certain experiences that I have learned in the process. My primary goal was to understand the impact of shift work in mind and health of people. In the process of gathering data, I have segregated my tasks on a weekly basis which has helped me complete the goals in a systematic way that I have developed in the course of making these assessments. Primarily, in the initial weeks, I searched for journals which provide me a thorough understanding of the concept of shift work.
I have also searched data and statistics on the topic to understand the severity of the issue and the percentage of the healthcare organizations that integrated multiple working shifts of the staffs. Moreover, I have also learned of the impacts of long hours on psychology and how that impacts the health of people. In the process, I have come to understand that mental well being of a person is largely associated with his health as well. Positive mental state always culminates into the positive functioning of the body’s normal procedure.
Henceforth, some of the weeks were spent by me in searching for adequate information on how long shifts hours impact staff. Moreover, the completion of the current research has also helped me to understand the importance of providing flexibility to staffs who work in healthcare organizations. Thus, in the future I would always make sure that the staffs working in healthcare sector always work in flexible time shifts.
They shall not be made to work more than the maximum time limit in a week. Along with that, I would also ensure to provide them weekly off. Thus, this enhancement of knowledge has been possible due to the completion of the current research only. I have come to know about the importance of a positive mental state while working and it order to develop performance, it is immensely important to have satisfaction at peace at workplace.
