Introduction to Cardiovascular Diseases  Cardiovascular diseases (CAD) relate to diseases of the heart and blood vessels. They mostly involve narrowing of the blood vessels by plaque formation. A plaque is an accumulation of lipids, cholesterol, macrophages and debris in the inner walls of the arteries, the formation of which limits the flow of oxygen through the arteries. This form of CAD is termed as atherosclerosis and can lead to other heart related symptoms such as stroke, angina, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction and so on. Various factors are associated with CAD such as incraesed blood pressure (hypertension), excessive smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, genetic composition (heredity), unhealthy lifestyle and so on. Prevention of CAD is associated with working on these risk factors, thereby being associated with healthy diet, quitting smoking and working on weight loss programmes. Various medications can also be opted for to reduce the cholesterol levels in circulating blood. Various studies have indicated the relation) of alcohol with cardiovascular disease. It is noted that increased alcohol consumption increases the susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases. This is because consumption of alcohol leads to a temporary increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Therefore, increased alcohol consumption  can lead to weakened heart muscle and the resultant effect is a heart attack or stroke.    Get solution
